What’s the Difference Between Full and Partial Dentures?
Voted best dentist in Denton in 2016! Affordable prices with or without insurance State-of-the-art dental implant procedures
When patients come into Denton Smiles Dentistry in Denton, TX, that are missing 2 or more consecutive teeth, one of the smile-restoring cosmetic dentistry procedures we offer them are dentures. Dentures are basically life-like porcelain or plastic replacement teeth with a resin base that matches your gum tissue, and are intended to look, feel and perform like your natural teeth. Based on the number of missing teeth, our licensed family dentists, Dr. Glenn Vo and Dr. Susan Tran, will recommend either a partial or full denture appliance to the patient. When Are Partial Dentures Used?
Partial dentures are only intended to replace 2 or 3 missing teeth, and are either made with a plastic base or metal framework that supports the number of replacement teeth. They are held in place by clasps and rests that are carefully formed to fit the surrounding natural teeth. Traditional, or “permanent”, partial dentures use a metal framework because they hold up to wear-and-tear well. Emergency, or “temporary”, partial dentures are made from a less-durable plastic material because they’re only worn until the permanent dentures are ready.
Why Would I Need Full Dentures?
Full, or “complete”, dentures are designed to replace an entire row of teeth, and use a plastic base that holds the set of fake porcelain or plastic teeth firmly in place. The plastic base is carefully colored at our lab to replicate the patient’s natural gum tissue. The denture appliance is held in the mouth by forming a suction-induced seal with the gums. Full dentures can also be kept in place by attaching to dental implants that have been surgically inserted in the jaw bone by Dr. Tran or Dr. Vo. There are temporary or permanent types of full dentures, just like partial ones.
